Mistake 11:
TESTING ONE RELAXATION METHOD AFTER ANOTHER
There are countless techniques and relaxation methods on the market that claim to help you sleep. These range from specific ‘sleep entrainment’ CDs to relaxation techniques and hypnosis. They are grouped together in one category because there is one simple reason why they so often do not work, particularly if your problem is well-established.
Most long-term insomniacs have gone through many, many relaxations CDs, mp3s and techniques.
That’s me! I’ve tried them all; they don’t work for me!
How do you know they don’t work?
If you knew how many things I have tried you wouldn’t ask that question!
But I do know! Why? – because I have probably tried them all myself. I was one of those people who had tried everything. I would give anything a go! People would say to me ‘If I can’t sleep I just watch my breath’ or ‘I tried the Fred Bloggs hypnosis CD and it put me to sleep in minutes’ and my ears would prick up. If there was a new technique out there, I wanted to try it. I tried everything. Of course, I would always wait until a really high-pressure night to test the method ‘properly’. There seemed no point in trying it on a night when I may have slept anyway because I would have been unable to tell whether the technique itself was effective. After all, what was the point if it wasn’t going to work on the worst nights?
The odd thing was that whenever I tried a new relaxation method, or a technique designed to help me sleep, I found that it actually often seemed to make things worse! I would lie in bed, listening to my new hypnosis CD, or trying out my new relaxation method. I would start to relax deeply – on a physical level. But my mind would be alert, waiting to see what the effect was going to be of this unfamiliar bedtime companion. Eventually, I would start to become acutely aware of the fact that I was listening and acutely aware of the fact that I was relaxing. As you know, being acutely aware of anything is not particularly conducive to falling asleep. In fact, I started to become awake, wide awake. I was fully physically relaxed and about as far away from being asleep as it is possible to be! Failure! Another relaxation method was deemed ineffective, another CD was resold on Amazon marketplace and once again, something hadn’t worked for me. I was still different, my problem was bigger, worse, more entrenched – I was just not like other people. My insomnia was quite unique, not like any of these ‘everyday’ insomniacs who could watch their breath for two minutes and fall asleep! What was different about me?
I could have kicked myself when I found out how simple the answer to this apparent problem turned out to be.
Why Relaxation Techniques Never Work for You
You probably are familiar with the phenomenon of people who live next to railway
